Valentines Paintings in 3 Easy Steps
Step 1: Draw the heart
Pick 3-5 watercolor brush pen colors for this heat painting ideas. You can use a combination of pinks and reds or the favorite colors of the person you are giving it to.
With your watercolor brush pens draw a heart.
As you can see no two hearts are the same. So don’t stress if there’s one that you don’t like. With all of the other hearts your about to put on the card there no one will notice a funky shaped heart.

Step 2: Fill the heart
With your Mr. Pens brush, or your watercolor brush of choice, fill in the heart with a clean brush. The water will pick up the paint for the outline of the heart and will fill it in organically.
You can fill the pen up with water and squeeze it out while painting. I find this very difficult to control the water though. Instead I use it like a normal watercolor brush and simply dip it in a cup of water.
If you want the hearts darker, make the outline of the heart darker or fill the heart in 3-4 mm. And vice versa if you want the hearts more transparent, use a thin line to outline them.

Step 3: Salt the heart
To add additional texture to the heart add some salt to it and it creates very cute Valentines Day cards.
Coarse salt will produce a more pronounced effect on the watercolor paint than fine salt would. I used Morton coarse salt but any salt will work.
You want to apply the salt when the paint is still wet. When it has completely dried you can brush the salt off.
How does a salt and watercolor art piece work? The salt attracts the water which is tinted with watercolor paint. When the water evaporates it leaves the paint in a condensed spot around the grain of salt.

Repeat Steps 1-3
To finish your easy love paintings simply repeat steps 1-3.
Overlapping hearts gives it depth and it’s fun to see the colors blend. If you want the hearts to blend together paint over a heart while it is mildly damp.
Vary the sizes, shapes, and colors of the hearts to make it look random.
It can be hard to create the random look. At least it is for me because I think about which colors are touching what color. One way to avoid this overthinking is by choosing what area you are going to place a heart and then randomly pick the watercolor brush pen. Whichever one you choose is the color that heart will be.
When you are done with the salt remember to place it back in your art salt container to use it next time!
