5 Creative (and Easy) Ways to Design Procreate Coloring Pages
There comes a point in any artist’s life where you are stumped and don’t know what to create. Perhaps you are starting that way with coloring pages or you have already made the ones you wanted to, but don’t know what to do next. This happens to the best of us and is nothing to be ashamed of, but it can be incredibly frustrating.
These next 5 tips are what I use to get inspired, and hopefully they will do the same for you!
1. Pick a Theme to Design Color Sheets Yourself.
Picking a theme is a pretty obvious tip, but super helpful. Themes can include holidays, seasons, locations, special events like birthdays or anniversaries, or the subject in your coloring sheets.
As I create coloring pages to sell on my Etsy shop I use the theme method a ton! It’s easy to get excited about a topic and whip up multiple coloring pages at once. The more excited you are about what you are drawing the more you will want to put the time and effort into it and it will be fun for you.
To help the future you when stuck, get a notebook/create a note on your phone of any themes you come up with during your day to day life. Then when you are stuck pull out that list and pick one that is interesting to you at that moment.
A few ideas on my list are:
- Locations with Hammocks
- World Landmarks
- Beach Scenes
- Halloween Coloring Pages
- Boho Mountains
2. Use Procreate Features
If you are familiar with Procreate you know all about its useful features for digital artists. If you are new to Procreate, it is an app available on Apple iPads that can be used for digital art and animation. (They have other variations of the app for different uses and appliances.)
To learn how to use it and more about specific features check out these blog posts:
By far the best feature Procreate provides for coloring pages is the layers ability. This allows you to create a sketch design and then perfect it in another layer.
Another cool function is the symmetry tool. It’s perfect for drawing butterflies because you don’t need to worry about recreating the drawing on the opposite side of the page because it does it for you. But it isn’t limited to just vertical symmetry, you can do horizontal, quadrilateral, and radial symmetry. If you are looking to create mandala coloring pages this simple tool will be your lifesaver!
3. Are you making coloring pages for kids or adults?
When you begin brainstorming coloring page ideas, you will want to know if you are designing it for a child or an adult. This will help you know if you want thin or thick lines, the drawing to be complicated and intricate or simple, and what the theme for the color sheet to be.
If you are designing coloring pages for kids, focus on kid-friendly themes (popular cartoons, etc.), simpler designs to match their attention spans, and thick lines to help them color in the lines.
4. Look through vacation photos.
Looking through your photos is a great way to gain inspiration for any artwork, but espcially for coloring pages. Pick out one that brings good memories or one that you just think would be really fun to color. Then you can upload to picture in Procreate and trace it to create your own coloring page.
This is how I came up with the conch on the beach coloring page.

5. What do you want to color?
Sometimes the simplest idea is the best. What do you want to color? What do you want to draw? If you have an idea, then make it happen! If you want to color a nice sunset with a coconut tree and a hammock, but can’t find it in any coloring book, make it yourself.
The awesome thing about making coloring pages is that you can make whatever you want, whenever you want, wherever you want, and however you want.
