How to Make Endless Desert Wall Art with 1 Design
Supplies needed:
- A digital art program. I use Procreate and love it!
Are you new to Procreate? No worries check out this 5 Types of Digital Art – An Awesome Beginner’s Guide.
Step One: Create a sketch
In Procreate open up a new canvas.
You can use whatever brush you want for your sketch. I really like the Procreate Pencil because it looks like a pencil when used.
Your simple design needs a cactus, a horizon line, and a sun. You will need to draw them all on the same layer.
Once you get those how and where you like then you will add the detail lines. These include the lines on the cactus, the sun rays, and the layers in the dirt. They are just an outline for when you add color so they don’t need to be perfect.
This is the example of the desert wall art sketch for this post.
Step Two: Add Color
Choose a color scheme for your digital desert wall art. If you are having difficulties try searching desert sunset color palette on Pinterest. Or you can buy a Procreate color palette on Etsy or other websites.
If you don’t want to buy them just look for palettes the colors are labeled with a 6-digit name. Take those 6 digits and manually input them to the Value tab on the Colors.
If you want to save those colors add them to a new or existing color palette by holding an empty square in a palette and choosing “set current color”.
Choose a brush. If you want a sleek clean look use one of the Inking brushes. If you want to be able to use the color drop feature (where you outline the area and then drop the color into that area and it fills it in) use a brush that isn’t flaky on the edges. To color drop by just touch the area you want to be filled repeatedly, click on ‘Continue Filling’ at the top after your first color drop.
Different brushes can be fun to try out. The Stucco brush in Painting and Ink Bleed in Inking was used to create the desert art in this post
Each section of the design needs to have a separate layer: sky, sun, cactus, and ground.
An easy way to get different shades of color is to use the Disc or Classic view in the color feature.
The nice thing with layers is that you can turn them off while you paint another layer. This is especially helpful between the sky and the cactus layer. It also allows you to erase one layer without erasing another layer. If you use a brush that doesn’t apply the color in a solid layer you may want to erase the sky that is behind the cactus.
Step Three: Rearrange the Layers
You need to put the layers in the right order to help hide the ends of the cactus or the sun’s rays.

- Ground
- Cactus
- Sun
- Sky
The most important step to creating endless desert wall art with one design is grouping your layers. With each digital desert, you will want to combine them and name them to stay organized. Then when you start a new piece you turn off that entire group.
After a few different layers this is what your layers section will start to look like:
