Easy Mixed Media Art Flowers
You will want to start this mixed media art flowers painting by mixing three different watercolors together. In this painting, I used red, yellow, and orange.
While the paint is still glossy drop the three colors into random areas on the paper. This is similar to the watercolor technique of water blooms but with color.
Once the background dries use the same colors to place flowers in the areas where the watercolor blooms are at.
To give the flowers more colors add different colors into the middle and let them mix together.
Use the acrylic paint marker pens to loosely outline the flowers to make them pop.
For the background use colored pencils. Put down the colors where you want them and then blend them together by coloring into the other colors. It is difficult to get them smooth on the page because of the textured watercolor paper.
This beautiful painting of mixed media art flowers could be used as wall art or as a card.

Use a couple of watercolor colors to paint the background. While the paint is still wet apply salt to the paper. Wherever the salt touches it will absorb the water. When the water evaporates it leaves behind the paint that has been moved towards the salt particle. This leaves an interesting look with the watercolor.
After the paper is completely dry brush the salt off and see the effect.
Use watercolor brush pens and acrylic paint marker pens to create a mixed media painting.
With the watercolor brush pens mark the squiggly lines that were created by the salt. Then with the acrylic paint marker pens put a dob of paint where the paint is most concentrated from the salt.
This created a look similar to a map where you can see water, mountains, and meadows.
You can use this for a thank you or get well soon card, or simply as practice with watercolor and salt.
Mixed Media Art Rocks
Using plastic wrap on watercolor is fun! You could try to place the plastic wrap in a pattern that you want or just crinkle it up and lay it down to see what happens. You will want to place it while the watercolor is still wet.
Once it is on there for about 10-15 minutes carefully remove it from the paper. You will notice that where the plastic touched the paper it caused the paint to be more concentrated than where it didn’t.
I decided to trace the areas of concentrated paint and make them look like fancy rocks. To do this you will want to use acrylic paint marker pens. You may want to use gold or silver to add a shiny look to the rocks.
With a thin Sharpie create a textured background. In this painting, I chose to do swirls, but you could do straight lines, squiggly lines, chevrons, crisscrosses, etc.
Now you have created a painting of mixed media art rocks.
Mixed Media Art Clouds
Start this painting by applying three to four colors that look good blended together. You can apply rice to the wet surface of the painting.
I attempted to do this however, I didn’t have the rice handy and by the time I applied it to the watercolor, it had dried too much because it didn’t do much.
Using the same blending method of the colored pencils as you did with the first painting color the background of the sky. Then create clouds with acrylic paint marker pens by making thin curved lines with various colors.
In the end, you will have a stunning mixed media art clouds piece.

Once you have the watercolor background to your liking drop some rubbing alcohol onto the wet surface of the paper. This effect is immediate and satisfying to watch. However, don’t drop too much of the rubbing alcohol because it can make the paper too soggy.
After everything is dry start adding petals around every drop to create flowers. It’s okay if the flowers overlap, but to make them distinct from each other wait until one flower is dry before painting the overlapping flower.
Add as many or as few petals to each flower. Varying the size, shape, and petals of the flowers will make it look more natural.
After you are happy with the flowers and they are dry use a brush marker and loosely outline every petal.
This simple and quick easy mixed media art project of flowers looks beautiful and effortless. Share your masterpiece with friends or family and with me! (@mhfpaints on Instagram).
