Digital Art List of Ideas
i. Sunset Digital Painting
The first idea is to paint a sunset.
Sunsets not only create beautiful and stunning paintings, but they are easy to make.
You will want the “sun” to be the brightest and lightest color on the painting. Use a bright yellow or even white for this spot.
Then as you get further away from the sun you will want the colors to get darker.
Some common colors for sunsets are:
- Yellow, Orange, Pink, Purple
- White, Yellow, Orange, Pink, Red
- Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue
This examples of digital art was painted using a free watercolor Procreate brush from Brushes for Procreate.
Place the colors down in order from brightest to darkest on the entire page. Then you will add your horizon line using a blue color that you like.
ii. Digital Art Background
Make a few digital art backgrounds.
This is one of the best ways to learn the features and brushes that Procreate offers.
Things to try out:
- Procreate Brushes. Try out brushes from Textures, Abstracts, Elements, Materials, and Vintage sections.
- Drawing Guide. Get to this feature by clicking the tool icon, turning on ‘Drawing Guide’, and clicking ‘Edit Drawing Guide’. You should check out the ‘Symmetry’ options. Whatever you draw in one section will automatically draw in its opposite section.
- Smudge Tool. See out how to blend and mix colors in your digital artwork.
iii. Digital Moon Art
Create a scene with a moon.
A painting of a night sky with a large, bright moon is elegant and perfect for a beginner!
This exercise will help you learn how to use the layers tool, the clipping mask trick, and the Gaussian Blur feature.
Paint each of the following sections on a separate layer: the night sky, the moon base, the texture of the moon, the reflection of the moon, and the stars.
If you place the texture of the moon layer above the moon base layer you can turn on the clipping mask on the texture layer and it will automatically remove any paint that isn’t directly on the moon base layer. This comes in very handy and will save you a lot of erasing time.
While you are in the reflection of the moon layer you will apply the Gaussian Blur feature to create the bright luminescent effect.
- Click on the magic wand icon and choose ‘Gaussian Blur’. To change the blur run your finger across the screen. Choose the percentage of blur that you like most.
Add stars with the Glimmer Procreate brush in the Luminance section.

iv. Gnome Digital Art
Next on our digit art list is drawing a simple gnome.
Gnomes are cute and fun to draw. They are the perfect way to boost your confidence in your artistic ability.
There are 3 shapes needed to create a gnome: an oval for the body, a circle for the nose, and a triangle for a hat. That’s it!
Create a whole family of gnomes or a background for your gnome or paint them with different colors. You could even make the hats festive by adding hearts for Valentine’s Day, a witches hat for Halloween, a top hat for Thanksgiving, or a Santa hat for Christmas. The possibilities are endless.
v. Guitar Digital Drawing
Draw a guitar.
This guitar was inspired by a Rock Band Wii guitar. You don’t even need to own a guitar to draw one though. You can look up pictures of them on the internet and pick one that you like.
Try out the spray paint Procreate brush for this piece of art. You can choose different sprays to produce different textures. And you’ll come out with a cool-looking guitar!
vi. Clouds Digital Art
Look outside your window for inspiration to paint a scene with clouds.
Clouds can be intimidating but they are actually fairly easy to paint, especially with Procreate brushes. I like to use the watercolor brushes, a different one for each color.
A tip for clouds is they aren’t just white. They have multiple colors in them from the reflection of the water molecules and shadows in them. If it is a blue sky kind of day, use a subtle blue-white color for the base of your clouds. Then add darker gray-blue colors for the shadow.
The idea is to make them look fluffy so don’t overwork them. If you are getting frustrated take a break, eat a snack, and then come back to it. Before you jump right in and start working on the clouds take five minutes to just observe what you have done. Think about what you like, what you don’t like, what you want to change and why, then pick up the stylus to continue painting.
vii. Pineapple Digital Art
Last but not least, paint a pineapple.
The fun thing about pineapples is they can be as realistic or cartoonish as you want them to be. You can keep coming back to this easy digital art ideas for beginners to create a new and unique piece of art.
You can try out different Procreate brushes, color combinations, art styles, Procreate features with this piece of digital art.
